Something new is happening in downtown Laconia - and it's making history.

In 2026, Laconia became the first city in New Hampshire to launch a Social District, creating a new way for residents and visitors to experience downtown. The concept is simple: purchase a beverage from a participating establishment, enjoy it in an approved Social District cup, and take a stroll through designated areas of downtown while exploring local shops, restaurants, events, and attractions.

But this isn't Bourbon Street.

The goal isn't late-night partying. Instead, the Social District was designed to encourage community engagement, support local businesses, and create a vibrant downtown experience that encourages people to stay a little longer, shop a little more, and discover everything downtown Laconia has to offer.

How the Social District Works

The Social District currently operates:

  • Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  • Noon to 8:00 PM (with recent approval to extend summer hours to 9:00 PM)

Visitors can purchase alcoholic beverages from participating licensed establishments and carry them throughout designated portions of downtown using approved Social District cups. Drinks must remain within district boundaries and cannot be brought into another licensed establishment. Cups are clearly marked and limited to 16 ounces.

The district generally encompasses the downtown area surrounding Main Street, Veterans Square, Pleasant Street, Canal Street, and nearby side streets, creating a walkable experience centered around Laconia's historic downtown.

More Than Just a Drink

The real appeal of the Social District isn't the beverage, it's the experience.

For years, downtown Laconia has quietly evolved into one of the Lakes Region's most exciting destinations. Independent restaurants, coffee shops, local retailers, entertainment venues, and community events have transformed the area into a place where people can spend an entire afternoon exploring.

Now visitors can grab a cocktail, craft beer, or glass of wine and enjoy everything downtown has to offer at a more relaxed pace.

Places to Explore Within the District

A walk through the Social District might include:

• Lunch, dinner, or cocktails at Laconia Local Eatery
• Fresh seasonal fare and outdoor dining at Trillium Farm to Table
• Craft beer, vinyl records, and live music vibes at Defiant Records & Craft Beer
• A hidden speakeasy experience at The Candy Bar
• Coffee and waterfront strolls near Wayfarer Coffee Roasters
• Live entertainment and performances at Colonial Theatre Laconia
• History, exhibits, and community events at Belknap Mill

These businesses are helping create the walkable downtown atmosphere that city leaders hope will continue to grow throughout the year.

Why This Matters for Downtown Laconia

Social Districts have become increasingly popular across the country because they encourage people to linger, explore, and support local businesses.

Instead of driving from one destination to another, visitors are encouraged to park once and enjoy the downtown experience on foot. That means more foot traffic for retailers, restaurants, entertainment venues, and special events. City leaders have also expressed hopes of pairing the district with outdoor concerts, community gatherings, car shows, and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.

For residents, it creates another reason to spend time downtown. For visitors, it offers a new way to experience the Lakes Region beyond the waterfront.

A New Chapter for Laconia

For decades, people have known Laconia for Bike Week, Weirs Beach, and Lake Winnipesaukee.

Today, downtown Laconia is building a new identity. One centered around community, local businesses, arts, entertainment, dining, and year-round experiences.

The Social District is another step in that evolution.

Whether you're grabbing a craft cocktail before a show, meeting friends for dinner, shopping downtown, or simply enjoying a summer evening stroll, the Social District offers a fresh way to experience one of the Lakes Region's fastest-growing downtown destinations.

And as New Hampshire's first Social District, Laconia is once again proving that small cities can think big.
